For the voices of the young people of Barnsley

Chairperson- Keith Norton
Keith is the older statesman of the choir who has been dragged out of retirement
by Mat to assume the role of Chairman. Keith has been a teacher in Barnsley for 39
years, spending most of his working life at Edward Sheerien School. During the 1990s
he acted as business and project manager for 6 large scale musical events that were
performed in the Metrodome. These included in excess of 500 children on each occasion,
5 musicals, two of which were specially commissioned and one of which was taken to
the Millennium Dome in Greenwich to represent Barnsley. Keith is spending his well-earned
retirement as the Chairman of Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choir which is a highly regarded
choir. He also works as a volunteer guide for the National Trust at Nostell Priory.
Keith is a highly capable and experienced singer who still has youthful exuberance
and maintains a keen interest in education and singing, providing the choir with
a wealth of experience in managing large and significant arts projects. He has worked
alongside Mat to secure funding and organise the structures necessary for running
this organisation. We are very fortunate to have Keith supporting our choir and know
that he has made an incredible contribution to the group being formed.
Secretary - Ann Wroe
Ann is a highly professional and capable supporter and we are so grateful she took on this role. She is the mortar between the bricks, the person we all turn to for advice and someone who makes things happen. She organises meetings and concerts, liaises with many outside agencies and does so much to realise ideas. During the Miraculum Choir tour she organised host families which, in itself, merits some type of award! She maintains close links with Kingston School where she is a parent governor. All communication is done through Ann and her positive, friendly and hard working nature endears her to all who come into contact with her. I cannot imagine Barnsley Youth Choir without her.
Treasurer— Joanna Kershaw
Joanna has taken on the unenviable task of becoming treasurer for Barnsley Youth Choir which is a highly complicated and demanding job. Her expertise in accounting has provided the choir with solid foundations and allowed us to develop further. Much of her work is unseen and done away from rehearsals in her own time. She allows us to to be transparent as an organisation, something that is fundamental to our sustainability and allows us to plan for future events secure in the knowledge that we remain financially viable. Aside from this incredible work she helps out with catering at various events, has raised money through a range of activities and always gives her all in support of our young people. She is a force of nature, a truly persistent and committed supporter who is integral to our success.
Librarian - Charlie Cookson
Charlie has taken on the role of librarian for Barnsley Youth Choir. This has become a significant job with up to 50 sets of music (some of which have 150 copies) to organise. He deals with the upkeep of existing music and also orders new music which is a huge task and we are grateful for his support.
The Management Committee, as it name suggests, manages the operations of the choir and sets out its policies and direction. It is an inclusive committee and consists of :-
The Chairman The Secretary The Treasurer
2 Choir Registrars 2 from the Music Committee 2 members of the Youth Choir
2 co-opted members for specific tasks.
The Management Committee meetings are open and other people may attend to provide input but they would not have a vote on decisions. People are elected/nominated for the positions at the AGM.
